DESIGNER OF THE WEEK - GOYARD

Goyard is a lesser known luxury brand compared to its French brothers; Hermes and Louis Vuitton, but without a doubt its past is as captivating and intense. The Goyard family had been part of the Compagnon de Riviere for the previous two centuries, a guild of transporters of wood by river from the forests of Morvan up to Paris where it was used to heat homes in the city. Wood in rafts seventy five metres long and five metres wide took eleven days at a time to cross 220 kilometres up to the Yonne and Siennes Rivers to their destination. The return journey was made on foot.

Francois Goyard was born in 1828, in Burgundy. In 1832, Francois' father Edme Goyard moved his family to Paris. In 1845, the seventeen year old Francois was an apprentice to Henri Morel, who had acquired Maison Martin, a packing-case and trunkmaker to the Duchess of Berry located at 4 Rue Neuve des Capucines. Francois became the company's director when Morel passed away in 1852. Interestingly, the Goyard name was established in 1853, one year ahead of Louis Vuitton and seventeen years after Hermes.
Goyard was known by many aristocrats for developing bags according to royal shades and their crests. Goyard also claims to have produced the first workplace suitcase (la malle bureau en Fran&Ccedil).

Francois' son Edmond was born in 1860, followed by another son, Maurice. At the age of 25, Edmond Goyard (1860–1937) took over from his father, who then turned to making jewelry. "Maison Goyard" was given the new name of "E. Goyard Aine". The initial E not only acknowledged Edmond, it also paid homage to his grandfather, Edme Goyard, who had died six years earlier. Edmond went on to open boutiques in various locations – including Bordeaux, Biarritz and Monte Carlo, in addition to the John Wanamaker stores in New York and Philadelphia. Around the end of the 19th century, the mark ‘Ne Ct’ (meaning Notable Commerant) was adorning all catalogues, receipts and labels.

Edmond Goyard participated in the Exposition Universelle et Internationale of Paris, in 1900, where Goyard luggage won a bronze medal. In 1906, in Milan, it received a gold medal, and at the French-British Exposition of 1908 in London, it also won a gold medal. Maison Goyard was given the Award of Honour at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs.

Goyard opened a specific department for "dogs, cats, monkeys". Here, they provided harnesses, kennels, boots and even protective automobile glasses for pets. In 1923, on his 30th birthday and the 70th anniversary of Maison Goyard, Edmond's son, Robert Goyard (1893–1979) became Director, with Edmond remaining involved as Creative Director. (Captain Robert Goyard had been awarded the Legion of Honor, Croix de guerre with four citations and the Military Cross in the First World War.) A patent for the "Malle Bureau" was later obtained by Maison Goyard in 1931. Comprising a portable trunk which included a writing table, it could also accommodate a typewriter. Arthur Conan Doyle was one customer who ordered this trunk.

In 1936, Robert Goyard decided to enter into a cooperative agreement with other "houses" in the Place Vendôme, including Boucheron, Cartier, Charvet, Chaumet, Guerlain, Morgan and Ritz. Their offices were located at Goyard's headquarters at 233 rue Saint-Honore. In the late 1990s, Maison Goyard was purchased by the Signoles family, and the company introduced several new colours at that time. Goyard will monogram their luggage's canvas with the initials of its customers upon request, and produces special orders and custom pieces, made to order in Carcassonne, France. Their most renowned motif is the three dimensional pattern recognized as the chevron, juxtaposed to represent a Y which symbolizes three centuries of the Goyard family and their Compagnon de Riviere ancestors. The material is a cotton, linen and hemp blend that is coated with gum Arabic resin-this benefits in a tremendous skinny, lightweight, and water resistant material.

The age old brand crept up on us only when Barney’s featured them in their window in the early 2000′s. Clients are now willing splash out big money to have their initials, a crown, or stripes of each and every coloration embellished on their own personalized bag. There are only twelve boutiques in the world, Beverley Hills, Boston, Hong Kong, Kyoto, London, New York, Osaka, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Seoul and Tokyo and Goyard does not have online retail.

Cartier holds an impressive share in the luxury market as well as occupying the leading position in jewelry and watches. Cartier has had a long standing relationship with royalties all over the world as well as celebraties and socialites. One Prince of Wales hailed Cartier as "Joaillier des Rois, Rois des Joailliers"(Jeweller to Kings, King of Jewellers). Like many famous luxury houses, Cartier had humble beginnings dating back to Paris in 1847. Louis-Francois Cartier took over his master's workshop and continued with the business. His son Alfred looked after the administration side of things but it was Alfred's sons Louis, Pierre and Jacques who worked together to carve a worldwide status Cartier enjoys today.

The Santos was the first men's leather wristwatch designed and created by Louis Cartier in 1904 after his aviator friend Alberto-Santos Dumont complained about the impractical pocket watches. In 1907, Cartier entered a contract with Edmond Jaeger who agreed to supply watch movements exclusively. Then came a string of successful watch designs that are still in production today, Baignoire,Tortue in 1912 and Tank in 1917. In the early 1920's, a joint company was formed with Edward Jaeger (Jaeger Le-Coultre)to produce movements solely for Cartier although Cartier continued to use movements from other great makers like Vacheron Constantin, Movado and Audemars-Piguet.

Cartier also has many signature jewelry lines still in production today, Trinity collection(1924) and Love collection (1969).

Sadly, after the death of the three brothers, the company was sold to a group of investors led by Joseph Kanoui in 1972. Then in 1993, an umbrella group of 13 company members were formed under the Vendome Luxury Goods Group. Some of the famous members include Mont Blanc, Chloe, Dunhill, Piaget, Lancel, Baume & Mercier and Vacheron Constantin.

School mates Charles Tiffany & Teddy Young travelled from New England to open their fancy emporium in lower Manhattan, New York city in 1837. Rumours have it that Charles's father loaned them $1000 to help them get started. They sold premium goods from stationeries to costume jewelry. They were the first at the time to adopt a no discount policy with fixed price tags and cash only payments. In their first year, the color Tiffany blue was chosen as their trademark and from then the mere mention or the sight of the little blue box have made many hearts flutter. It is without a doubt that there is no other brand that is as loyal to its color as Tiffany & Co.

In 1841 J.L. Ellis joined the company and the store became Tiffany, Young and Ellis. After a few successful years, they went from costume jewelry to real jewelry. They also expanded their stationery collection and in addition they sold clocks, watches, perfumes, dinner sets, horse, dog whips and many other sundries.

The first Tiffany product catalogue known as the "Blue Book" was launched in 1845 and it is still published today. The trading name was shortened to Tiffany & Co when Charles Tiffany took control in 1853 and in 1878 he acquired one of the world's largest and fanciest yellow diamonds from the Kimberley diamond mines in South Africa. Gemologist, Dr. G Kunz was employed by Tiffany to cut the 287.42 carat diamond to 128.54 carats with 82 facets and it was swiftly named the Tiffany Diamond. In 1886, Tiffany introduced the engagement rings with 6 platinum prongs with an intention to achieve a more complete return of light from the stone thus maximising its brilliance.

Charles's son, Louis Comfort Tiffany famous for his decorative glass and window designs was appointed Tiffany & Co's first design director in 1902. For nearly two centuries, the jewelry house earned itself an exceptional reputation where people go to find their loved ones beautiful gifts for all occasions.

The company name "Rolex" was registered in 1915 and the founders Wilsdorf and Davis have maintained that the name chosen had no significant importance. It was chosen because they wanted an easily pronounceable word in any language and short enough to be placed on the face of the watch. Sonia Rykiel was born in Paris in 1930 to a Polish Jew family. At the age of 17, she secured a job merchandising windows of a Parisian textile store. She married Sam Rykiel, a boutique owner in 1952. In 1962 she fell pregnant and went on a hunt for maternity wear and found nothing suitable so she decided to design her own. She used the same supplier that supplied to her husband's business.

Since then she was affectionately named Coco Rykiel by the American press and also hailed the "Queen of Kints" for her long clinging knits, tiny sweaters, long shawls and large rolled back cuffs. She was also the first designer to print words on her sweaters and as well as putting seams on the outside of her garments.

In 1980 she was voted one of the world's top 10 most elegant woman. Since then, she launched a cosmetic line, menswear, footwear, fragrance,babywear and household linens.

The Mackintosh or Macintosh (abbreviated as mac or mack) is a form of waterproof raincoat, first sold in 1824, made out of rubberised fabric. The Mackintosh is named after its Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh, though a letter k is added by many writers.

Although the Mackintosh style of coat has become generic, a genuine Mackintosh coat should be made from rubberised or rubber laminated material.

Charles Macintosh patented his invention for waterproof cloth in 1823 and the first Mackintosh coats were made in the family's textile factory, Charles Macintosh and Co. of Glasgow. But in 1830 the company merged with the clothing company of Thomas Hancock in Manchester. Hancock had also been experimenting with rubber coated fabrics since 1819.
Early coats had problems with smell, stiffness, and a tendency to melt in hot weather, but Hancock further improved their waterproof fabrics, patenting a method for vulcanising rubber in 1843, which solved many of the problems.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the company continued to make waterproof clothing. In 1925 the company was taken over by Dunlop Rubber
In the mid 1990s the company which then owned the brand, Traditional Weatherwear, was on the verge of closing its factory in Cumbernauld near Glasgow. It was then acquired by Daniel Dunko. Around the turn of the 21st century, the company made progress to establish the traditional rubberised Mackintosh coat as an upmarket brand in its own right. They collaborated with leading fashion houses such as Gucci, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Liberty. The coats became particularly popular with Japanese women, and the company won a Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2000 for its success in international trade.

Stephen Sprouse (Sept 12 1953 - Mar 4 2004) was famously known for being both an artist and fashion designer. He pioneered the mix of uptown sophistication in clothing with a downtown punk and pop sensibility from the 1980s.

His first collaboration with Louis Vuitton was in 2001 and the world really took notice of him then for his creation of the graffiti logo bags. They were instant sellouts and are collectables today.

Marc Jacobs paid tribute to Stephen by utilizing his 1987 graffiti leopard images for bags, scarves and shoes from Fall 2006 to 2008. Then in 2009, Marc Jacobs again hit the jackpot with the Rose collection.

Jeanne Lanvin may not sound as familiar as other iconic designers but her couture house is by far France's oldest, founded in 1889. At only 22 years of age, the young aspiring designer opened her first boutique in Paris in 1909, on the prestigious Rue Du Faubourg Saint Honore. Jeanne's humble beginnings as a milliner saw her passion expand to womenswear, childrenswear and fragrance. She was also the first couturier to offer menswear in 1926.

Lanvin built its name on producing exquisite beadings, trimmings and embroidery. Along with ultrafeminine clothing and sensual fragrances, the brand was set for success. However, Jeanne's death in 1946 caused shaky grounds for the label and saw it being passed between several relatives and financial conglomerates before it was eventually sold to a Taiwanese firm in 2001.

The new management quickly hired Israeli designer, Alber Elbaz as creative director to boost the resurgence of the brand and today Lanvin stands as the epitome of French couture.

Bottega Veneta had humble beginnings as a family business in 1966 specializing in luxury leather accessories. It was founders Vittorio and Laura Moltedo who created the signature Intrecciato line of woven leather that is instantly recognizable today. DESIGNER OF THE WEEK - SALVATORE FERRAGAMO

Born in 1898 in Bonito, Italy, Salvatore was the eleventh of fourteen children. He always had a passion for shoes and made his first pair of shoes at age nine for his sisters to wear on their confirmation. He later went onto Naples to study shoemaking for a year and returned to open a little shoe shop based in his parent's home. In 1914, at sixteen years old he decided to move to Boston, where one of his brothers worked in a cowboy boot factory. After a brief time in the factory, Salvatore convinced his brother to move to California, first Santa Barbara then Hollywood. It was here he found success where he opened a shop for repairs and made to measure shoes. His shoes soon became prized items among celebraties and was hailed as 'Shoemaker to the Stars'. This fame only partially satisfied him as he couldn't understand why his shoes pleased the eyes but hurt the foot. So he decided to study anatomy at the University of Southern California.

He decided to leave the United States after thirteen years at age twenty nine to settle in Florence. He wasted no time in fashioning shoes for the wealthiest and most powerful women in that century, from the Maharani of Cooch Behar to Eva Peron to Marilyn Monroe. He also opened a workshop in 1929, experimenting with new designs and applying for new patents for his designs.

An unfortunate streak followed with bad management as well as economic pressures forced him into bankruptcy in 1933. He took a low profile for a while and re-emerged in 1950 to an expanded workforce of 700 expert artisans that produced 350 pairs of shoes a day. He died young in 1960 at age 62 but his name lives on as a shoe visionary who designed for his time and beyond. After his wife died, his six children ran the Ferragamo company. Its global operations has now propelled it to a luxury goods empire offering bags, eyewear, silk accessories, watches,perfumes and a ready to wear clothing line.

The Salvatore Ferragamo museum opened in Florence in 1995. Located on the second floor of Palazzo Spini Feroni, the museum holds a prized collection of over ten thousand models of shoes created by Ferragamo over fourty years.

His most famous creation is the undoubtably named the "Cage Heel". His daughter Fiamma inherited his incomparable talents and came up with the famous "Vara" pumps in 1978. Virtually unknown just 4 years ago, French footwear specialist Christian Louboutin has soared very quickly. His name is mispronounced in every language so why do his shoes stand out so much, besides his fine craftsmanship, sexy killer heels and quirky creations? Well, he happens to be the only shoe designer whose footwear is instantly recognisable just from looking at the soles. The glossy nail-varnish red sole has become his trademark.

Louboutin, born in 1963 took an early interest in women's fashion since he was a child. At 16 he already had shoe drawings in his school notebooks. One day on the streets of Paris, he saw a billboard of a pair of stilettos crossed out by 2 big thick lines. The sign was a reminder for women not to scratch the wooden floor in front of the Museum of Oceanic Art. He was haunted by this sign and soon after his drawings included shoes with compressed buckles and soles.

Later on, Louboutin started attending parties and dance halls in Paris, offering his shoes to the women at the events. It wasnt a success as most of the women claimed to like his designs but they didnt have the money to spend. So he went back to school, to learn all the basics from Charles Jourdan, Roger Vivier, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Maud Frizon. He was part of a team who made history by creating shoes for Marlene Dietrich, the Shah of Iran's coronation and for Christian Dior haute couture. He went on to open his first boutique in Paris, offering free coffee to shoppers as an incentive. Not long after a big American company Neiman Marcus took on Louboutin shoes. His shoes are now seen on the feet of Sarah Jessica Parker, the Olsen twins, Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Luxury should not be anti-progress," Louboutin says, referring to women's freedom in fashion. "My idea of progress is not to make shoes higher, but ever finer."

Think J.P. Tod's, an Italian leather goods empire built by a driving shoe. The Delle Valle shoe company was founded by a cobbler, Fillipo Delle Valle in the 1920's. The humble family's shoe business started out of a basement and today sees itself in line with other venerable brands in the luxury market.

His grandson, Diego was and still is the driving force behind the company. In 1984, he set off to New York with a trunk full of shoe samples in a temporary showroom in a hotel room. He spoke not a word of English, letting the shoes speak for themselves. Not long after, stores like Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman were selling them.

Diego later opened a small showroom in Soho featuring his own line of shoes and also the shoes he designed for Gianfranco Ferre and Azzedine Alaia. In a little corner on a small table of the store, a pair of driving shoes were displayed : a very supple leather moccasin with soled rubber pebbles that continued up the heel. It was christened a American sounding name - J.P. TOD's.

By the early 1990's, the driving shoes had its own store with its many style variations. A growing number of keen celebraties like Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas and Denzel Washington were seen wearing them.

Only in 1997 did an elegant J.P. Tod's leather tote appear draped on the arms of more celebraties. A new kind of style was born : discreet and comfortable.

It all started as a fur and leather business in 1925, run by an Italian couple, Adele and Edoardo Fendi. Fendi slowly began to prosper and a second store was opened in 1932. Then the business was slowly passed onto their five daughters from 1946. The Fendi sisters later crossed paths with a then young German designer, Karl Lagerfield who took on the role of chief designer. HERMES BIRKINS - THE ULTIMATE LUXURY!

The sheer mention of the word "Birkin" conjures mixed emotions among those in the know. The Hermès Birkin Handbag is what some would call a must have handbag while others would call it the root of all evil. It has become an icon of ultimate luxury and remains to have the longest waiting list of any fashion house. Hermès is never in a hurry because the wait could be up to 6 years depending on the complexity of the order. It takes up to 2600 handstitches to produce a Birkin and each one is painstakingly constructed by one master artisan alone. To complete one Birkin, it could take between 15 to 30 hours which translates into weeks which is about the same time it takes to assemble a BMW. With the amount of meticulous work involved it doesnt come as a surprise that only 5 Birkins are created from the Paris workshop in a week.

The Birkin's origin differ quite a bit in details according to press accounts. We will never know for sure the amount of truth and myth in the stories but it doesnt make it any less enchanting. One of the stories has it that Jane Birkin, a famous English actress/singer told fashion writer Dana Thomas that while seated next to then-Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas in 1984 on a Paris to London flight, a flutter of notes spilled out of her overly packed Hermès-made datebook. Dumas took her datebook and returned it a few weeks later with a pocket sewn into the back (which has since become standard). Birkin shared with Dumas her frustrations in finding a leather weekend bag and at his persuasion, described her ideal. Shortly after, the bag she described arrived at her residence.

A more poignant version of the story was repeated by film director Andrew Litvack. The year was 1981 and says Jane Birkin was called to Hermès to receive the first prototype. She didnt realize they wanted her to pay for it as she was leaving with the bag. Litvack claims Birkin was eventually reimbursed, and now receives a 10% discount on Hermès products . She became the name-sake of the most sought after Hermes Birkin.

Another story says that Jane Birkin co-designed the Birkin with then-Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas, after complaining that the Kelly (named after Grace Kelly) was not practical for everyday use.

Its comforting to know there are variations to the Birkin today and you are not stuck with one style especially when it carries such an extravagant price tag. The Birkin is based on the Haut a Courroie (still available by order, its called the HAC today), a saddle bag created in 1892. It was revamped and made into a travel bag for men in the 1930's. Then it was made smaller and more feminine for Jane Birkin in 1984. She later complained that the bag was too tall to fit under the airplane seat and the handles too small to carry on her arm. Hermes went back to the workshop and came back with the Birkin Et Voila which was an instant success. The body was shortened with the width increased and the straps made longer. Recently in 2005, designer Jean Paul Gaultier joined the Hermes team as head designer and reinvented the infamous Birkin into the first shoulder Birkin, named the Birkin JPG.

Birkins can be made in many different colours, leathers and fabric. Togo and Clemence leather are very much preferred in the production of Birkins followed by Swift, Epsom and Fjord. In order of color popularity they are Black, Gold, Rouge VIF, Blue Jean, Orange/Potiron and Etoupe, the latest to join the list. Exotics include Lizard, Crocodile and Ostrich. Australia is the biggest and preferred supplier of porosus crocodile skins which originated from saltwater crocodiles and this goes through a very stringent process with the matt croc being the most stringent. The niloticus croc tends to come from Africa but its not always the case. Special orders are available, ranging from different fabrics, double or triple colours, pipings, linings to more exotic leathers and diamond embellishments.

The metallic hardware on a Birkin bag (the lock, keys, buckle hardware and feet studs) are typically plated with gold or palladium which will not tarnish, unlike silver. The metal lock may be covered with leather as an option when custom ordering or even 24 carat gold. All these precious attributes add to the weight of the Birkin with each one averaging at 1.5 kilograms.

A very precious gem graced our store today...a 1998 vintage Chanel Jumbo in gold hardware that is in pristine condition...the lambskin is absolutely exquisite....a rare find indeed!!!

History has it that the Classic Flaps were released in February 1955 hence the reference name 2.55 Classic. Available in 3 sizes - small, medium and jumbo. The 'CC' lock was introduced in the 1980's by designer Karl Lagerfeld. The original lock is called the Mademoiselle Lock as Ms Coco Chanel never married.

When you think of beauty, grace and style, there is no other than Grace Kelly. In 1956, she was featured on the cover of Life magazine with a crocodile Hermes purse. Straight after its moments in Life, the purse was dedicated to her Highness and nicknamed the Kelly bag. Today, it is the most coveted bag as seen on many famous arms.

Hermes, a French fashion house founded in 1836 started out as a saddlemaker but wisely changed its course at the turn of the 20th century to travel pieces and daywear bags. The Kelly is crafted entirely by hand by a single artisan from start to finish, and embellished with a petite padlock, keys and gleaming hardware made of white or yellow gold. Beautifully made, the bottom is built of three layers of leather. A single artisan can spend up from 18 to 24 hours painstakingly constructing a Kelly.

The prices vary depending on the hides you choose: silky smooth or pebbly textured calfskin; exotic lizard, crocodile and ostrich, in colors that span the spectrum. Everything seem to be in limited quantities as you can wait up to 2 years or more to own a Kelly bag.

From her first millinery shop, opened in 1912, to the 1920s, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel rose to become one of the premier fashion designers in Paris, France. Replacing the corset with comfort and casual elegance, her fashion themes included simple suits and dresses, women's trousers, costume jewelry, perfume and textiles.
She claimed a birthdate of 1893 and a birthplace of Auvergne; she was actually born in 1883 in Saumur - her mother worked in the poorhouse where Gabrielle was born, and died when Gabrielle was only six, leaving her father with five children whom he promptly abandoned to the care of relatives.
She adopted the name Coco during a brief career as a cafe and concert singers 1905-1908. First a mistress of a wealthy military officer then of an English industrialist, she drew on the resources of these patrons in setting up a millinery shop in Paris in 1910, expanding to Deauville and Biarritz. The two men also helped her find customers among women of society, and her simple hats became popular.
Soon she was expanding to couture, working in jersey, a first in the French fashion world. By the 1920s, her fashion house had expanded considerably, and her chemise set a fashion trend with its "little boy" look. Her relaxed fashions, short skirts, and casual look were in sharp contrast to the corset fashions popular in the previous decades. Chanel herself dressed in mannish clothes, and adapted these more comfortable fashions which other women also found liberating.
In 1922 Chanel introduced a perfume, Chanel No. 5, which became and remained popular, and remains a profitable product of Chanel's company. Pierre Wertheimer became her partner in the perfume business in 1924, and perhaps also her lover. Wertheimer owned 70% of the company; Coco Chanel received 10% and her friend Bader 20%. The Wertheimers continue to control the perfume company today.
Coco Chanel introduced her signature cardigan jacket in 1925 and signature "little black dress" in 1926. Most of her fashions had a staying power, and didn't change much from year to year -- or even generation to generation.
She briefly served as a nurse in World War I. Nazi occupation meant the fashion business in Paris was cut off for some years; Chanel's affair during World War II with a Nazi officer also resulted in some years of diminished popularity and an exile of sorts to Switzerland. In 1954 her comeback restored her to the first ranks of haute couture. Her natural, casual clothing including the Chanel suit once again caught the eye -- and purses -- of women. She introduced pea jackets and bell bottom pants for women. She was still working in 1971 when she died. Karl Lagerfeld has been chief designer of Chanel's fashion house since 1983.
In addition to her work with high fashion, she also designed stage costumes for such plays as Cocteau's Antigone (1923) and Oedipus Rex (1937) and film costumes for several movies, including Renoir's La Regle de Jeu. Katharine Hepburn starred in the 1969 Broadway musical Coco based on the life of Coco Chanel.

The beauty of Burberry is the rich brand history and the international appeal. Burberry was founded in 1856, when 21-year old apprentice to a country draper Thomas Burberry opened an outfitters shop in Hamprsire, England. By 1870 it has become a major spot for local sportsmen and hunters, who admired new breathable yet waterproof fabric - gabardine. The invention of Thomas Burberry, gabardine was patented in 1888 as an innovative fabric, processed from waterproofed yarn. London shop was opened soon, in 1891. In 1901 Burberry was commissioned to design the serving uniform for British officers.

In 1891 Thomas Burberry opened an emporium in Haymarket, London, which still stands today as the company'sheadquarters. Ten years later, the company was commissioned by the War Office to design a new service uniform for British officers. They ... became the outfittersfor Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole in 1911, then to Ernest Shackleton on his 1914 expedition to cross Anartica. When war broke out in Europe that year, the companymodified its military designs to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare encountered by British troops, and the trenchcoat was created. After the war it became popular with civilians and over theyears has been worn by Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, Peter Sellers in the PinkPanther films, and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. In 1955 Burberry was bought by Great Universal Stores (GUS), owners of U.K. High street retailers Argos and Homebase.
